Part of my job is to demystify the pool building process for you. Today, we're talking about rock excavation—something that might sound daunting but is an essential step in ensuring your pool sits perfectly in your chosen spot.
Let’s Dig In: Understanding Rock Excavation
When it comes to building a pool, especially if you're considering a rocky site, understanding rock excavation is key. This process involves removing rock from where your pool will go, making sure the ground is perfectly prepped and safe.
Why Rock Excavation?
A significant part of Sydney’s geology consists of sandstone and hard shale. This material cannot be dug out like dirt, clay or sand. When building a pool in Sydney there is always a chance of finding rock or shale. Certain areas of Sydney are more prone to finding rock than others.
How It's Removed
Depending on what’s beneath your backyard, there are a few techniques we might use:
Excavator with Hydraulic Hammer: This is the most common method or removing rock. The harder the rock the longer it takes to remove.
Excavator with a Rock Saw: This method is used in conjunction with the hydraulic hammer. The rock saw is typically used when your pool is very close to your home. and the rock is extremely hard. Using a hydraulic hammer creates a lot of vibrations. Using the rock saw prevents vibration causing damage to your property.
Hydraulic Hammer
The most common way to remove rock.
Rock Saw
On the projects when the rock is extremely hard and the pool is close to your home.
How Much Does It Cost?
At Newpools, we charge rock on a volume basis (m³): We measure the volume of rock that is present within the excavation and work out an overall cost. Until you start the excavation, you can never be 100% certain of what is within the ground.
Standard Excavation : Rock rate $250 per m³. Pools range from 15m³ to 45m³ within our range.
Mini Excavation: Rock rate $350 - $450 per m³
